CHEMISTRY
Welcome to Chemistry with Ms. Hacker!
Critical ThinkingMemorize, memorize, memorize. That's what a lot of teachers have asked students to do over the years, but did they TRULY gain an understanding of the topic? My goal is to have students thinking critically each day. Even if a student doesn't know the answer to a question, he/she should be able to THINK through the problem, arriving at a plausible answer.

Proportional ReasoningI frequently encounter students who believe chemistry can't possible relate to their actual lives, but that's not true. Students use proportional reasoning ALL THE TIME without even realizing it!

Citizen ScientistsHeadlines pop up on the news and internet about the newest scientific research. One month NBC is discussing the "Chocolate is good for you!" and 3 months later they're discussing an article stating "Chocolate causes heart disease." So which is true? Who's study is telling the truth? Are either studies able to state their claim to any significant degree of confidence? I hope to teach my students various ways to spot faulty science throughout the year, creating citizens who are scientifically literate.
